In the hustle and bustle of wedding planning, don’t forget about your cake!  It plays a very important role in your wedding reception, and add to the decor of the room (in addition to being your guests’ dessert). When you meet with a cake designer, be sure to ask these important questions.

How long have you been in business?

You want to ensure your cake designer has experience with specialty cakes, including wedding cakes.  Baking a wedding cake is much different that baking a cake at home!

What is your range of costs per slice?

Typically, each guest will receive one slice, so the price of your cake will depend upon how many people you want to serve.  If you want your guests to be able to take a slice home with them (maybe as a favor), you will need to factor this in as well.

Are you able to design a cake from a photo?

Have you run across a picture on Pinterest of a cake that you absolutely must have?  Bring it with you to your initial appointment and ask if they can design it from a picture.

What kinds of cake flavors are available?

In addition to the availability of cake flavors, you’ll want to know if you can have different flavors for different layers of the cake…just in case you and your fiancé can’t decide on one!

What kind of fillings and icing are available?

Do you know the difference between buttercream and fondant icing?  Do you know which would be better for a warmer climate or an outdoor wedding?  Ask the cake designer what they have available and what they recommend for the setting of your reception.

Do you have liability insurance?

Every wedding vendor should have liability insurance, just in case something happens.

Do you offer a tasting?

Cake tastings can be fun (and filling)! Find out how many people can attend a tasting, and how many types of cakes you can try.

How far in advance do I need to book your services?

The most popular cake designers book quickly, so don’t wait until the last minute to choose your cake vendor.

Is there an additional charge for delivery and set up?

Most times, the answer to this question is yes, so be sure to understand what to expect.

Do you have cake toppers available?

You may be able to get your cake and cake topper from the same vendor (one less thing for you to worry about). If not, invitation companies, gift companies (like Things Remembered) have them as well.

Happy Planning!
